August 27th, 2010 § 0

So here’s the promised behind the scenes shots. Missed the images of that shoot? LINK!

Here are some pics of us having fun:

Don’t wear black soled shoes on a reflective surface. else you’ll be cleaning it up with WINDEX!

Photographers like to have fun too~ We’re just usually behind the viewfinder.

:)

Lily has the craziest look ever! So human..

curious small dog in a confusing big world.

Homage to Walter Maurice’s edited pictures.

Walter…ever so graceful… Walter.

there’s something about behind the scenes shots that I just can’t get enough of. It has a sort of VIP feel where only select few can go and be.

Now some fun pics of the MA ladies doing their thing. MA = Master Artists… Because their work makes my job as  a photographer SO easy. Hire them and give them double. Its worth it.

Master Hair Stylist.

Master Make-up Artist.

Her hand. (Those nails were quite the surprise!) Did a triple take, come to think of it.

No matter how great of a photographer, hair stylist, make up artist, and especially model… it’s all about the collective or you’re nothing.

To all you youngin’s getting into the photography biz, treat your people right and they will produce beautiful work. Enough said.

40/50’s Pin Up inspired, with a MW twist

August 26th, 2010 § 0

Was asked by Walter Maurice and Christine (Xteeener) Nguyen to collaborate on a 40/50’s style pin up shoot. To be perfectly honest, I am not as cultured in knowing the variety of pin up poses there were in the 40’s and 50’s. Being a food photographer trying to branch out to the rest of the world of photography… posing people is still an interesting notion. I keep watching pro photographers posing models and am amazed at how proficient they are. To be able to get a model in position, get the lighting set, and ultimately capturing the shot so effortlessly and with little time wasted… I guess that’s why they get paid the big bucks.

Anyways, enjoy the combined efforts of some great minds/talents, I present to you… 40/50’s Pin Up.

From what I can recall from that day, I remember talking with my team about how it was too bad we didn’t have a red head… a little photoshop magic consultation from a certain expert, Tammy Tso, and viola~!

I’ll post up some behind the scenes stuff tomorrow. Enjoy these for now~

Shadows | 2010.08

August 20th, 2010 § 0

I’ve decided to sharpen my skills with lighting. Specifically with an off camera flash. Every month I’ll hope to post up images of items around the house, in the studio, or even just stuff on the road (as you’ll see in today’s post)

Wast just out with some friends and waiting around to leave when I noticed a few things just hanging around in the parking lot.

Gone from darkest to lightest. Check it.

This way~

Got Handicap?

A lonely shopping cart; no longer in use. Secluded from his brotheren in the freezing cold of night.

Littering takes a “SPECIAL BLEND” of character (or lack thereof)

Life is all around us.

Went over to the penthouse studio over in downtown Atlanta the other weekend to shoot some behind the scenes images of The Listeners, Al K!ng, D#, IKEY-boy, Millie Forte, and crew.

you know its going down when there’s Hulk in the building.

IKEY-boy working on an audiophile’s dream of a setup. At least I wish I had it. heh.

Business, non-stop. That’s how they do.

D#, always playing. No complaining here. That man was sick on that violin! (Video at the bottom)

Millie Forte adding his vocals.

invading in a city near you.

Some of The Listeners in front of the lens.

IKEY-boy at the helm. Making this track sound real good.

What can’t you produce with a spray or two of HIP HOP BREEZE?!

Holeman & Finch | Burgers at 10.

August 19th, 2010 § 1

A little late night snack for all you night owls out there. Fitting as I normally go to Holeman and Finch pretty late; usually from 8pm until 11:30pm. Yep, a good 3.5 hours of foodgasmic heaven. This is probably my 3rd time posting about Holeman and Finch and I have no qualms about going back and shooting more shots of their food. My hope is to one day shoot images of the food that even remotely portrays how amazing the cuisine is. Seriously, do yourself a favor and eat here one day. You will not be disappointed.

Glazed Pork Rillion served on buttermilk butterbeans – wow the combination of the crisped pork/melt in your mouth meat; in combination with the beans… Oh… (i hate to bring religion into this but…) my god.

Schnitzeled Lamb Fries with pickled figs – the vanilla-rye whiskey gastrique (basically, and correct me if I’m wrong, a reduction of vanilla, rye whiskey, and sugar) is drizzled on battered lamb fries. I’d recommend trying them before you find out what they really are.

And then you have that glorious burger.

Thanks to the hard work of Drew Phebus.

Every time I walk into Holeman and Finch, I can’t help but marvel at this particular sight; the first thing that greets me each time I come in. A window with “Eat” written at the top and as you move down the layers, there hangs various meats in one row… then, lined along the frosted glass, various breads. Such a lovely sight to behold.

I hope one day they will let me shoot their food. Hell, they can pay me with their food for all I care!

Shemoni & Jason | Mehndi

August 17th, 2010 § 0

Before I dive into the post. Please note that my really good friend Shemoni and the rest of the team from Kruti Dance Academy will be on America’s Got Talent tonight on NBC at 9pm. Please watch and vote for them! She sacrificed her honeymoon to go and compete for this wild card spot. Again, NBC. 9pm. Vote for Kruti. Please!! Thanks!!

Now back to our regular scheduled program…

What is Mehndi you ask? Well it’s the art of applying henna designs (an herbal plant concoction, normally in the form of a paste like substance) onto the skin. From what I’ve been told, this application of henna is usually done for weddings and or festivals. In this case, it is the former. As the henna residue reacts with the heat of the body, it changes color. The higher the body temperature, the darker the henna designs are; highly desirable. And like I had mentioned in the previous post, here’s an informative excerpt from wikipedia:

The ceremony is mainly held at the bride’s house or at a banquet hall on the eve of the marriage ceremony or few days before the marriage. Generally the bride and groom attend the event together and on the occasion a professional henna artist or a relative applies mehndi to the bride’s hands and feet the designs are very intricate. Often hidden within the mehndi pattern the name or initials of the groom are applied.

Like most of my posts, I’ll start with the food~ There were many unique dishes that I haven’t seen or tasted before but, one dish that stuck out…

…Pani Puri. Basically it’s wheat flour pockets that gets filled with chick pea/spiced water and a liquid that’s been infused with mint and a few other ingredients. REALLY tasty little things that are consumed all in one bite. You eat them as they’re made because otherwise it gets soggy.Eating it as she handed it to me, helped maintain the crisp texture of the outer pocket. Wow. Truly a delightful little meal.

Now I’m not sure what had come over them… to go from this calmed state of mind to a cupcake feeding frenzy, is beyond me. But, it sure was fun to watch and photograph! haha.

Photographers from “Our Labor of Love” were hired for this lovely wedding. Really friendly and you could tell they enjoyed the ceremony as much as the those who were there to celebrate it. Link to their website at the bottom of the post.

“Baati!”

Conversing over a secret wedding olympics… wonder whatever happened to that.

They did SUCH an amazing job with the decor. It was gorgeous. I’m sure these pictures do the scenery no justice but, here they are:

My lovely friend Charito showing off her Mehndi.

This was rather interesting as well. The bride chooses a location, on her hands or feet, to have the husband’s name hidden amongst the Mehndi. A form of hide and go seek, if you will; proves “as an evidence of his sharp eyes and active brain to impress his girl.” -overheard someone say.

Beautiful, no? A design where husband (on the left) and the wife (on the right) form a heart when both hands are brought together…

This, again, was day 1 of 4. Stay tuned for the rest~!

Two of the friendliest and nicest people you’ll ever meet. I’m so happy for the two! Just a teaser photograph; I’ll try and have pics edited by next week.

But, yesterday went over, to the house of the bride, to see the lovely cultural experience; day 1 of a very culturally rooted Indian wedding. Traditionally, weddings from India are done over a span of four days long. If you thought the planning, scheduling… essentially all logistics for a day long wedding was hard, try doing it for one that is four days long; four different locations, decorators, florists, caterers, and having to decide where the various groups of friends/families, coming from all corners of the world, will stay where/who will go to which day’s event… probably the act of planning a wedding like this should be considered a world wonder.

Simply gorgeous was this event. The house had all sorts of delicious foods, wonderful herbal aromas from the henna, every corner of the house was filled with the bright colors from the lovely decor, and the smiles…so much warmth and happiness was under that one roof! If this is anything like what the other couples days will be…I’m in for a real treat~

Paul Hu & Pure | Swimsuit Shoot

August 11th, 2010 § 0

Pure and Paul Hu teamed up to produce this shoot at this HUGE house, probably worth millions, the other weekend. Anyways, a swimsuit shoot with a few lovely looking models, various pieces from Pure’s clothing line, and an awesome pool; what more could you ask for?! Super fun. Check them out over at the Lenox Mall location (if you’re in Georgia). Link at the bottom.

From what I recall, it was quite a hot shoot. I luckily wore some athletic wear where the material helped with cooling. Again, the heat was quite intense. Especially shooting around 1 or 2 pm where the sun was directly overhead. Had to use the California Sunbounce Sun-Scrim to diffuse the model to allow for even tones on the model’s skin. But, out there holding that scrim pole for a good while, I got a decent tan from it. lol.

Was unable to shoot behind the scenes pictures at the start; I was unsure if what I was assisting with would allow me to whip my camera out from time to time. But, only near the second half was I able to. My apologies to models Anna Stevens and Cambria Lewter for not photographing you ladies. After that point though, was able to get the following images of the shoot:

models and crew, enjoying a short break.

Maegan with the blue lambo. *drool*

This was probably my favorite shot of that day. ChristyDiane sporting her ’stache tattoo. You read correctly, she tattoo’ed a mustache onto her finger. So awesome~!

Paul Hu knows model poses. Enough said.

Looks like Walter is good to go. lol.

Good eats | Shoya Japanese Restaurant

August 10th, 2010 § 0

A cool little restaurant over in the Brandsmart/H-Mart shopping center in Doraville, Ga. From what a few friends keep telling me, it’s one of the better places in town to get Japanese cuisine.

I’m interested in going again soon to try their sushi and sashimi; wish to see what the quality of their fish is like. This time around, the group and I only ordered rolls.

Okonomi Yaki – Japanese pancake with pork, egg, and vegetables.

Hiyayakko; a chilled tofu dish that’s topped with green scallions, chili radish, and shredded seaweed.

Thinly sliced beef with scallions.

Onigiri; rice shaped in spheres wrapped with seaweed garnished with salmon. Served with pickled plum

Assorted rolls. Mackerel roll on the left; the big roll on the right.

And I know this is weird to say but, I liked this restaurant a little more knowing that they have their hours of operation listed on their website. I feel like it’s as basic of information as the location where the restaurant is at. Kudos to Shoya.
